First Time Playing Golf? Here's What To Do

First Time Playing Golf? Here's What To Do

If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve been invited to play golf — maybe it’s a casual nine holes with friends, a TopGolf date night turned tee time, or a company outing that’s landed you on the fairway.

For first-time golfers, the sport can feel intimidating when you’re new, but we're here to break down everything you need to know — what to wear, how to act, and how to feel confident before you even swing a club.

At Featherie, we’re here to help you look and feel like you belong, no matter your experience level. Let’s get you course-ready.

1. What to Wear Golfing for the First Time (And Yes, It Matters)

Golf has its own fashion code, but the good news is: it’s evolved. You don’t need to wear something your dad would. Public courses don't usually have dress codes, but if you're playing at a golf club or private course, appropriate golf attire is required — for women, this typically includes a collared top and tailored bottoms like a skort, pant, or golf dress (golf skirt or dress length can vary by club or course). We recommend checking out the golf club or course's website beforehand to confirm what their dress code is.

Our tops and bottoms (like skorts and pants) will always pass the test. You just need to look polished, put-together, and ready to move comfortably.

Here’s what to wear:

  • Tops: Opt for a collared shirt or sleeveless polo. If you're looking for a more modern look, a tailored mock collared top (like our Erin Half-Zip Sleeveless) is a perfect first-time option as well—polished, breathable, and easy to style.

  • Bottoms: A golf skort is a game-changer. It’s stylish and functional (built-in shorts = freedom). Not sure if a skort or skirt is more your vibe? A skort includes built-in shorts underneath for comfort and coverage, while a skirt is more traditional and may require layering with separate pair of compression shorts. Our skorts (and pants) also include functional details like tee holder and golf ball storage pockets.

  • Footwear: Sneakers are usually okay for your first round (especially at casual courses), but golf shoes with spikes offer better grip.

  • Layering: Bring a lightweight outer layer in case of wind or early tee times. Our Gabriella Windbreaker is a cult favorite.

  • Accessories: A glove for your lead hand (left for righties), sunglasses, a hat or visor, and SPF.

Featherie fit tip: Our sizes use a numeric system. A size 2 = XS, 4 = S, 6/8 = M, 10/12 = L, 14 = XL. If you're in between, size up for comfort on the course.

2. Golf Etiquette 101: The Unwritten Rules That Matter

You don’t need to memorize the rulebook — but there are a few must-knows to help you feel at ease.

  • Be ready when it’s your turn. No one expects you to rush, but keep things moving. Plan your shot (including what club you want to use) while others are hitting.

  • Don’t talk during someone’s swing. Save the catch-up convo for after the shot.

  • Fix your divots and ball marks. If your shot takes a chunk out of the turf, replace it. If your ball leaves a mark on the green, use a repair tool.

  • Similarly, always rake the sand after hitting from a bunker and smooth out your footprints. Leave it how you’d want to find it.

  • Respect the course. Stay off the greens with carts and avoid standing directly in someone's line of putt.

  • Dress code does vary by course.  Again, public courses may be more relaxed than private clubs. Check ahead if you’re unsure — or when in doubt, go Featherie.

3. Don’t Know How to Play? That’s Okay. Here’s What You Can Do Instead

If you’re not swinging yet or don’t want to keep score, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy the day:

  • Walk the course, carry a few clubs, and take a few celebrity shots for other people in your group.

  • Be the hype girl. Golf is more fun when someone's bringing the vibes.

  • Take video of your friends by documenting their swing.

  • Use the driving range or putting green for casual practice.

4. Can I Wear Golf Clothes Even If I’m Just Going to TopGolf?

Absolutely. Featherie was built for this moment.

Our pieces are made to take you from the range to brunch — or to the cocktail bar after your first birdie. Whether you’re just getting comfortable swinging or heading to TopGolf for a night out, you can wear your golf look and look the part.

5. Pro Tips to Feel Confident on the Course (Even If You’re New)

  • Practice your swing a few times at home. (No ball needed.)

  • Ask questions. Golfers love to talk about golf.

  • Start with a par-3 or executive course. These are shorter and more beginner-friendly.

  • Look the part. Confidence starts with what you wear. (We can help with that.)

6. What Makes Featherie Different for First-Time Golfers?

Featherie is a women-founded golf brand designed for the modern player — from total beginner to scratch golfer. Our performance fabrics keep you cool, our silhouettes are made for movement (and compliments), and our designs were made with you in mind — the everyday athlete, the one who’s giving golf a shot for the first time and wants to feel like herself while doing it.

Whether you’re going to TopGolf, your first 9-hole, or just tagging along for the vibes — you deserve to feel good in what you wear.

You’re allowed to be new. You’re allowed to be curious. And you’re definitely allowed to look amazing doing it.
